Additional Chelan county Sheriff’s deputies are being brought on patrol to increase safety on county roads. Now, through the use of an $85,000 grant, Sheriff Mike Morrison says new license plate reader cameras will soon be strategically placed throughout the county.

"Our deputies are spread thin, so we need to find additional ways we can expand our footprint, and Flock with their license plate reader cameras assist us in best getting crime 24-7," said Sheriff Morrison. "Once we have a vehicle of interest that we can type the descriptor into the system, and the computer will kick you back images of vehicles that match that description."

The Sheriff shared with county commissioners the cameras are similar to state transportation cameras already hoisted over many intersections.

"My hope is that for the cost of one deputy we would have like close to 60 cameras throughout the county," the Sheriff added. "It can start giving us a direction of (suspect vehicle) travel and assist us in investigating burglaries where we get a lot of videos from house cameras and we can take that information and plug it into this system to better identify suspects as well."

Sheriff Morrison hopes the cameras will be a deterrent to crime.

It’s expected that the new solar powered vehicle license plate fingerprint technology cameras, will be in operation by January.
