Chelan County citizens weigh in heavily on Short Term Rental ordinance

Mounds of public comment have been received by Chelan County during the current review of the county law on Short Term Rentals (STR). Chelan County citizens are weighing in on potential changes to the Short Term Rental ordinance adopted in 2021.

The county law governing the location and permitting of STRs has been blamed for a decrease in county lodging tax revenues from reduced overnight stays by visitors.

Chelan County commissioner Tiffany Gering said at the commission's weekly meeting Monday that while the county planning advisory commission is discussing the issue, many comments are coming directly to the commissioners.

"There's already over 250 pages of public comments on the STR regulations." said Gering. "I sit down at one time and read everything. The sentiment seems to be the same."

The county law governing the location, parking, occupancy and general permitting of STRs has been blamed for a decrease in county lodging tax revenues from reduced overnight stays by visitors.

Chelan County has over 700 Short Term Rentals.

Commissioner Gering says the county commissioners wants the planning commission to take everyone's opinion into account before advising the commissioners on what changes may be made to the ordinance.

"You make a very good point that we want every comment to be part of the packet," commissioner Kevin Overbay added.

Commissioner Shon Smith said it (the public comments) "is going through the proper channels before we make any decisions."

The Chelan County Planning Commission meets again October 16.
