[7/7/16] Amtrak Collision in Wenatchee
Cleanup is going on today south of Wenatchee where a collision between an Amtrak train and a semi truck trailer at an uncontrolled crossing spilled about 23,000 pounds of dry calcium nitrate fertilizer last night. The Empire Builder, headed to Chicago with 161 people, was stuck on the track waiting for replacement engine to arrive. The driver of the semi truck from Laughlin Trucking of Carlton, Oregon, was attempting to make a u-turn on the Malaga-Alco Highway in the railroad switchyard,according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Brian Moore. The driver was leaving the switchyard when the train hit the trailer, cutting it into two pieces. The accident happened about 9:10pm. Calcium nitrate fertilizer in its dry form is not a hazardous material. There were no injuries in the accident.
