[11/25/16] Washington Marijuana Sales Brings In Highest Sales Tax In Nation
In the 2nd quarter of 2016 (April, May and June), Washington residents and visitors spent nearly $212 million purchasing legal marijuana products.
In July, Washington State shuttered medical marijuana shops, making all sales go through licensed recreational marijuana store fronts.
Sales at retail pot shops shot up by $66 million in the 3rd quarter to $278 million. That means legal marijuana sales will likely surpass hard alcohol sales in the state for 3rd quarter of 2016 and perhaps for the entire year.
Washington state taxes on cannabis are the highest in the nation, according to the tax foundation. Retail marijuana sales include a 37% tax on all marijuana products at the register.
