Just in time for the weekends 49er Days Celebration, the North Cascades Highway is scheduled to open tomorrow, May 8th, at noon. Highway crews only have about three miles left of gaurdrail repair and shoulder widening to complete before the opening, which will be easy work compared to the challenges they faced over the winter. Due to delayed snow falls later in the season, it not only accumulated quickly, but created avalanche dangers for crew members.
The WSDOT did manage to stay within their proposed 200,000 dollar budget, which varies from year to year depending on how severe the season is. If you think that's a lot, it takes almost 1 million to keep Stevens Pass open during the winter.
