CHELAN COUNTY PUD ACTIVATES EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN

Chelan County PUD has activated Emergency Action Plans (EAP) for Rocky Reach and Rock Island Dams.  This action was prompted in order to alert emergency responders and the public that the two Chelan County PUD dam reservoirs on the Columbia River will be operated below normal licensed minimums.

The PUD wants the public to know that the Rocky Reach forebay could fall 5 feet below its variable operating range and the Rock Island forebay could fall as much as 10 feet or more below its normal operating range.

Chelan PUD is doing this to safely operate its generators within design criteria.  The PUD needs to keep the generating units running as the river flow increases. Engineering analysis by the PUD has determined Rocky Reach and Rock Island dams will maintain operations within Federal requirements for safety.

Chelan County PUD is taking this action in response to the extraordinary lowering of the reservoir behind Grant County’s Wanapum Dam after a 65' crack was discovered in a support pier last week. The river continues to be lowered to relieve pressure on the impacted section of Wanapum Dam and to provide for inspection.

Chelan and Grant PUDs are coordinating closely during this emergency event. Chelan PUD’s top priority is protecting public and employee health and safety.
