AMBER Alerts Automatic To Cell Phones 8/13/2013
If you are like the other millions of Americans who own cell phones, you likely received a text alarm last week of an Amber Alert telling you of the abduction of 16 year old Hannah Anderson out of Southern California.

You received that text because of a new law that recently went into effect.
Beginning January 1 of this year, a new system was put into place that automatically sends AMBER Alerts through the Wireless Emergency Alert program.
The program stems from a law that congress initiated several years ago- but at that time, required cell phone users to sign up for the alerts.
Brian Josef, with the Wireless Association, says under the new law, cell phone users are automatically enrolled for three different classes of alerts.

Josef says those texts are geo targeted.

Authorities say more than 200 tips were received from the public after the alert was issued last week looking for James DiMaggio’s blue Nissan Versa.
One of those tips aided in the safe return of Hannah, when an FBI agent rescued her after shooting and killing DiMaggio on Saturday at a remote campsite in Idaho.
