Death of A Suspect Under Investigation 7/24/2013
Chelan County Sheriff’s Office Detective’s, along with Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Wenatchee Police Department are currently investigating the death of 40 year old Jason M. Nalls of Waterville, who was in custody of a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy in Waterville, Douglas County, Washington.  Douglas County Deputies responded to a Domestic Disturbance at Nalls’ residence earlier in the day on the 22nd at about 11:00 AM.  After clearing this incident, Deputies were called back to the residence later in the evening at about 10:00 PM after Nalls reported someone shooting at his house.  Deputies were unable to confirm Nalls’ claim of any gunfire in the area and now Nalls had barricaded himself in the bathroom.  Once the Deputies were able to get Nalls out of the bathroom, they requested he be transported to Central Washington Hospital for behavioral health concerns.  Nalls ran out of the house and Deputies were unable to locate him.  At about 1:00 AM he was soon located a couple blocks away from the residence.  When the Deputy exited his car to contact him, Nalls gained access to the driver seat of the Deputy’s patrol car.  Nalls began driving the patrol car away, dragging the Deputy until the patrol car entered a park two blocks away and struck an embankment.  The Deputy attempted to deploy his tazer to gain compliance of Nalls.  After a continued struggle, Nalls was placed in custody and as they waited for EMS, Nalls became unresponsive and stopped breathing.  CPR was immediately started and EMS arrived, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful and Nalls died at the scene.  The Deputy sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Central Washington Hospital.
Whenever a Deputy is involved in an incident where someone dies, mutual aid is requested by a neighboring agency as a routine.  Douglas County Sheriff Gjesdal requested this assistance from Chelan County Sheriff Burnett. The investigation in this incident is ongoing and there will be more information as the investigation allows.
