Accident Near Malaga Injures Several 7/11/2013
Chelan County Sheriff, Brian Burnett reports this morning at about 1:30 A.M., Rivercom dispatch received a 911 call reference a truck which struck a power pole in the 3000 block of Stemilt Creek Road with multiple occupants.  Upon Law Enforcement’s arrival, it was determined there were five people total who were in the truck at the time of the collision.  Witnesses at the scene directed Deputies and Washington State Patrol Troopers to an area down an embankment in the woods where a 21 year old male was heard screaming in what appeared to be severe pain.  It was later determined this subject was ejected out of the back of the truck and received a broken femur to his left leg.  A 17 year old male was located semi-conscious still in the bed of the truck with blood coming from his head.  He was later determined to have received a severe head injury and sustained a broken jaw and broken cheek bones.  A 19 year old male was located just outside the passenger compartment that had also been in the bed of the truck at the time of the accident, but it is unclear at the time of this report the extent of his injuries.  A 21 year old male who was in the front passenger seat was the only occupant that didn’t sustain any injuries.  The driver, 21 year old Matthew Putnam of East Wenatchee was found passed out behind the steering wheel of the truck and appeared to be heavily intoxicated.  Deputies located an unloaded .45 caliber pistol which had apparently fallen out of the truck near the driver’s door.  At the conclusion of the investigation, Putnam was cleared from the hospital and arrested for 2 counts of Vehicular Assault and 2 counts of Assault 3rd.  During the emergency workers attempt to treat Putnam for possible Shock and any neck or back injuries, he assaulted a Deputy by punching him and later assaulted hospital staff by spitting at them.  Neither the Deputy nor hospital staff member sustained serious injuries during the incident.  The five males had been drinking alcohol and shooting the pistol in the area of LillyLake.  When they left that location, three of the males jumped into the bed of the truck.  Additional charges for the Minors in Possession of Alcohol and Furnishing Liquor to Minors are pending further investigation.
