Frying A Turkey? Read This First... 11/20/2012
We are just days away from the annual Thanksgiving Day feast. But as cooking the traditional bird in a turkey fryer gains popularity among Americans, so does the number of accidents associated with their use- making the potential hazards of cooking that dinner far worse than simply putting on a few extra pounds.
Although manufacturers have made strides toward enhancing product features in an attempt to make turkey fryers safer for consumers, Underwriters Laboratories remains firm in its decision not to certify any turkey fryers with its trusted UL mark.
UL has been around for more than 100 years and continues to be a world leader in product safety testing and certification.
Chelan District 7 Fire Chief, Tim Lemon, tells us that every year, the idea of people using cooking their birds in turkey fryers is worrisome.
If you plan to cook your turkey in a fryer this Thanksgiving, do not overfill the fryer, use well insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles and when possible, wear safety goggles to protect our eyes from oil splatter.
