Scammer Targets Chelan Residents 10/2/2012
A Safeway employee helped save a young woman from falling for a grant scam.

Barbara, an employee for Safeway, was working in customer service and overheard a young woman on the phone finalizing her plans to Western Union funds to India. That information made Barbara pay closer attention and ask the young woman some important questions.

Some other common scams include a phone call claiming you’ve won a lottery and asking you to send them the tax on it. Barbara wanted to remind people that the government will take the tax before sending you your winnings.

Other common scams include the Nigerian Letter, Identity Theft and Advance Fee Schemes. The FBI recommends never throwing away ATM receipts, credit statements, credit cards, or bank statements. Never give your credit card number over the phone unless you made the call. Reconcile your bank accounts monthly and notify your bank of any discrepancies immediately.

Barbara wanted to extend an offer to anyone receiving a call or email that may be suspect.
