The Chelan Friends of the Library is celebrating reaching their community fundraising goal of $160 thousand to renovate the historic MasonicTemple into a state of the art public library.
The funds raised by the City and the Friends of the library, along with a $490 thousand community development block grant will help complete the renovation project.
Gary Sterner, President of the Chelan Friends of the Library told KOZI that the committee is thrilled with meeting their goal, but adds that the initial amount of $160 thousand is just the bare-bones amount needed.
Additional donations will be used to optimize the use of the entire building, with focus being on the second floor community space. The list of necessary improvements include: additional restrooms, emergency exits, energy efficient windows and elevator replacement.
The 7,000 square foot main floor library will include a technology equipped meeting room that will also be accessible when the library is closed, a stage for performances and presentations, a comfortable and quiet reading room, a custom designed teen area, computer work stations, a genealogy research space, and a children’s area with access to a safe fenced play yard.
Sterner says the move will truly be a benefit to the community.
Construction is expected to start in early December and finish within a year."CLICK HERE" for Audio
