With less than two weeks remaining until the 7th Annual Saul Gallegos Memorial Run – organizers are asking participants to pre-register for the event. The family orientated fun/run is a way for friends, family and community members to honor the Chelan CountyDeputy killed in the line of duty almost nine years ago.
On June 26, 2003, Deputy Gallegos was shot with his own weapon following a traffic stop near Manson. Saul was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting leaving behind his wife Maria, and their four young sons. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended three days later in Connell, Washington. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2004.
The run is held to honor Saul for the man, husband, father and law enforcement officer he was. Last year’s memorial run starting at SingletonPark in Manson brought in a record 180 registered runners and organizers are hoping to beat that number this year.
Sheriff Deputy Sergeant Rob Huddleston, says the event is meant for people of all ages and asks those who plan to participate to please pre-register.
Huddleston said following the fun/run, participants and non-participants alike are invited to attend a brunch sponsored by COPS – Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc.- an organization providing resources to surviving families.
Each year, between 140 and 160 officers are killed in the line of duty and their families and co-workers are left to cope with the tragic loss. C.O.P.S. provides resources to help them rebuild their shattered lives.
You will find a link to pre-register for the Saul Gallegos Memorial Run on our website @ KOZI.com The proceeds from the race go to an education fund for Saul’s and Maria’s four sons. We hope to see you there."CLICK HERE" for Audio
