What a way to start the season! The game was very back and forth for the first two quarters ending at 20 to 25 with Manson taking the slight advantage into halftime. We did a good job setting up the pass with a strong running game led by Mason Walters, Joe Strecker, and Eduardo Escalera. That led to a strong passing attack by Bo Charlton throwing 4 touch down strikes. The first was on a 45 yard pass to Eduardo Escalera and the next 3 to Spencer Ward totaling 102 yards.
In the second half Oroville did a great job tightening down on our running game. Combining penalties and negative yardage plays, we totaled -9 yards rushing in the 3rd quarter. Oroville set the tone defensively early in the 3rd quarter and we waited just a little too long to respond. Our defense did a pretty good job up front but we continued to give up the big play on 3rd and 4th downs, and two big touch down tosses of 30 and 37 yards. The 4th quarter was spent playing catch up as we were forced to try to make up an 11 point spread. We came up short on a hard fought game and Oroville capitalized with a couple of late touch downs to seal the game.
Defensively I thought that our front four did a really good job for most of the night shutting down the interior gaps and providing consistent pressure on their quarterback. Bo Charlton and Mason Cameron anchored the front four. Mason Walters was a stand out in the linebacker group making plays off the edge and causing a late fumble. Eduardo Escalera was our lone defensive back with 1 interception. We had several other good opportunities but just couldn’t make it happen tonight.
I would like to thank all of the fans that made their way out to watch our game and just say that we really appreciate all of their support. The boys gave it all they had and I am proud of their competitive spirit. We are really looking forward to an amazing season ahead. Hats off to Oroville as they were the better team tonight. Our next game will be in Lake Roosevelt on September 9th, 7:00 PM. Hope to see you there.
