Join Confluence Gallery Artist-in-Residence Tess Jenkins for a journey into experiential portraiture. Tess will guide artists in an open and loose approach to reading faces with an emphasis on gesture and experimentation.

Of all life drawing, people are most commonly intimidated by portraiture. We read faces differently and much more critically than other objects, small variations in proportion or placement of features can drastically change the way we read a face. This can make it frustrating when our main goal in portrait drawing is “accuracy”: to create a perfect likeness of our subject.

Students will be guided through quick drawings (10-15 min max) and exercises to help artists loosen up. Instead of having a single model, participants will break into small groups or pairs and will take turns drawing from and modeling for each other.

You are asked to bring drawing materials you’d like to use for short pose and gestural drawings. This is a great opportunity to pull out some new materials you’ve been wanting to play around with.

This evening is all about experimentation: a chance to break out of habits, loosen up and try something new!
